1973 Interview with Paul McCartney - Forming Wings

December 31st, 2008

July 6, 1973, Birmingham England

Steven:
Has it been difficult for you putting together a new band? There would seem to be an extraordinary amount of pressure on you to come up with a group of musicians that could compete with the Beatles.

Paul:
It was a bit touch and go at the beginning because it was a bit difficult for me to just suddenly develop a new band. Because let’s face it, the Beatles played Hamburg for like a year solid, playing eight hours a day before we ever were anything. Then we
still came back to Liverpool and played for years at these little places, Litherland Town Hall and the Aintree Institute. So it took a long time but that was the idea. We felt, ‘Well, we can’t take quite as long with this band but we’re gonna kinda duck out of the press thing and do little anonymous gigs.’ We did our university tour and we did a Europe tour which was a bit more kind of press but we thought we’ve got to swallow our pride and go right ahead.

Steven:
Were those considered breaking-in tours?

Paul:
Definitely, for us. It was to get the band used to playing. Because if you get any five people, it’s pretty hard to get a band out of it unless you’ve been going a year or so. It takes that long for five people to begin to understand each other.

Steven:
After playing with the same three musicians for such a long time, was it difficult to find new players? When you chose the people in Wings, were they your first choices?

Paul:
Yeah, they were all first choices. I didn’t do it like thinking, ‘OK, who are the best musicians in the world?’ and get it together like that. It was all done very kind of random, really; there was like a great element of randomness in it. I went to New York and we auditioned drummers which everyone said later was about the uncoolest thing you can do because these drummers are like the world’s top. And there’s me, I just got them all down in a basement and said, ‘Alright, lads …’ And they’re sitting there and there’s no band, each drummer is just sitting there. But Denny (Seiwell) was the one who kind of appealed to me; I thought he looks good, he sings, and he can drum great. And he’s picking up a lot of compliments now from musicians who think he ’s a red hot drummer. Brinsley really digs him, Brinsley’s drummer goes crazy over Denny. That’s Billy (Rankin).

Steven:
Was that your idea to bring Brinsley Schwarz on the tour?

Paul:
We did that special, that TV special, and that was kind of the end of our breaking-in period. We really hadn’t played very well, I don’t think any of us thought we played very well as a band up until the end of that special. And the last night, we did a concert for the special which we didn’t dig too much, it just didn’t get enough on for us. It was a bit of a dead audience.

Linda McCartney:
And the audience was just sitting there all hot.

Paul:
And they were all lit (with lights) and it was very. But we did a gig at the Hard Rock Café in London which is a real tiny, little thing for kind of charity. And Brinsley Schwarz were on before us and they kind of warmed it all up and they got a standup. Once you’ve heard a band rock a bit you can’t go on and not rock, you’ve got to play better. So we thought,’Great,’ and we went on after Brinsley and that was the first night we thought we played at all well. We were all double made up with that night. We rocked a bit that night.

Steven:
What are you going to do for a second encore? You’ll have to have one now.

Paul:
There are a lot of features with the act that are still a bit raw. Our opening is still possibly a bit raw, and the end we could go on a bit longer, but this is all fine tuning. The thing for us, the way we’ve done it is the idea of having places to go still. This is only our third thing really - university tour, European tour and this.

The aim was just to have a band, pure and simple. Have a good band. As to where we play, we’re easy. We’ll play down a pub if it’s cool, if we feel like it and they like it. But that’s the thing for us, we won’t naturally just play 50,000-seaters. That’s’ the interesting thing, we got Denny from New York, we auditioned some drummers there, and I knew Denny (Laine) was a good guitarist and good singer and stuff. So I just rang Denny up. And Henry was a kind of friend of Denny’s and Ian’s and he turned up one day at a rehearsal we were doing.

Henry McCullough:
Drunk!

Paul:
Drunk again. We didn’t really know, we were just thinking about it and stuff and he turned up and he played good stuff and that’s the kind of thing I meant about the element of random. It wasn’t like, ‘OK, now let’s audition another fifty guitarists and let’s see who’s who and what’s what.’ We just thought, ‘Great, let’s see how it goes’ and we had a band together then. It worked out good.

Henry McCullough:
Everybody got to know each other; you know me, I know you, and we took each other for what it is. We were a little bit scared of each other. It started off we were a little bit apprehensive and it was ‘Who’s this we’ve got in the group?’ but we managed to cool out.

Steven:
Did you have plans from the beginning to include Linda?

Paul:
Yeah, Linda was a kind of first inclusion because we’d done Ram together. I worked her so hard in New York because it was all very well having Linda on harmonies but I’m not having her do bum harmonies. So I only worked her like mad. I mean she had never done it before, she’d never done a thing before. If you listen to Ram, all those harmonies on there are just me and Linda. Pretty good, some of them. It was quite hard work as I said. I worked her hard on that album. There was a bit of (mimics Linda), ‘What do you mean I’m singing flat?’ But in the end it was OK and we did it.

Steven:
You must have noticed tonight that the more rock tunes you did created a bigger response. Will you emphasize those more and more?

Paul:
That’s what we’re thinking, that’s the way we’re going to include a few more of those kinds of numbers. The main thing in performance, an average audience always go for numbers they know. Witness tonight when we did ‘C Moon;’ as soon as we hit ‘C Moon,’ which was a hit in Britain but not in the States, how the audience reacted.

Linda McCartney:
On the university tour, we did some numbers twice.

Paul:
But rather than go back, we’d like to do new numbers in the same vein. And on the next album we’ll have another bunch of numbers from which to choose. And by the time that album is done the whole act will be there.

Steven:
How did it feel getting back on stage?

Paul:
It’s now beginning to feel really good. It feels good to have a gig. If you’re just recording it’s very nice but you get a bit sterile. It’s a bit testtube, a bit like being in the laboratory. And if you go out and play, it’s the difference between sex
and artificial insemination. Do you get what I mean? That’s what I think … audiences. It’s true enough, isn’t it?

Steven:
Being on stage, then, must be a natural place for you.

Paul:
You see I’ve always been, I suppose, a bit shy about getting up on stage. I remember the first time I ever got up on stage, I hauled my brother up with me. He had his arm in a cast, he’d broken his arm at scout camp, and I brought him up there with me. I brought my guitar with me and guess what I sang? ‘Long Tall Sally.’ I was eleven and still doing it.

How to Add 1000+ NEW Subscribers to Your List Each and Every

December 30th, 2008

HOW TO ADD 1000+ NEW SUBSCRIBERS TO YOUR LIST EACH AND EVERY MONTH by Melanie Rockett

We all keep hearing how important it is to grow our “lists.” Whether your list is an ezine, an online newsletter or a customer contact list it can create an income or generate additional traffic to your website.

The problem is that many web entrepreneurs don’t have the slightest idea how to kick start their lists, let alone keep them growing steadily month after month.

It is possible to develop and grow a list even if you have NO website. Having a website will definitely help, but don’t wait, get your list started right now and add your website later.

Why do you NEED a list? As freelancers and web entrepreneurs, we need a way to keep in contact with our existing and past customers … and we need a way to keep putting our information and name out in front of potential customers. We have to keep reminding customers that we exist and we have fabulous services to offer.

A graphic artist friend maintains a small local list. He sends out an occasional newsletter that talks about the work he has recently completed … he includes samples of the illustrations and graphics he has created for his clients. The clients he features love it because they get some exposure and free advertising! This newsletter serves to keep existing and old customer informed about the types of projects my friend does and it is a very non-pushy way of keeping his name in front of potential clients.

What my friend HASN’T done is expand his list and offer it to anyone who wishes to opt-in. He could potentially be building an international business with a very small additional effort.

How DO you build your list? There are literally DOZENS of ways! In this article I will show you how you can get started and literally add 1000+ new subscribers to your list a month.

First of all you must get your ezine or newsletter onto as many of the list announcement services and list directories as you can …

——————————– List Announcement Services ——————————–

There are dozens of newsletter and ezine announcement lists and ezine directories. The trick is finding them, making your announcement and getting on the permanent lists.

Start by developing an information file about your ezine. You don’t have to do this all at once … just start with the basics and add to it as you go. (I use ClipMate http://clipmate.proofpositive.info to make the copy/paste job faster and easier).

Here’s a list of the types of information you will be asked to provide:

>> The name of your ezine
>> A longer title (up to 100 characters) incorporating your most important keywords. Three versions of your ezine description.
>> A full description of up 250 characters, another of up to 150 characters, and one of just 100 characters. Use your most important keywords, adding more as space permits. >> A list of 10 to 15 keywords relevant to your publication. These are words and short phrases you want searchers to find your ezine under. Start with your most important keyword, and work your way down, with the least relevant word or phrase last. Separate each of the key terms with commas. >> The main URL of your Web site. >> The URL to your Ezine information/sign-up page. >> The URL to a sample issue (if you have one). >> The URL to ezine archives (if you have any). >> The e-mail address used to subscribe to your list. >> The e-mail address used to unsubscribe from your list. >> The approximate number of subscribers. >> Your full name Company/Organization name. >> A contact e-mail address that may be published online. >> A private contact e-mail address (not to be published).

Different directories will request different bits of information. Collect the information in your file as you go … so you don’t have to recreate it each time.

You may have guessed that this is a labor intensive project … so the next step is to establish a daily or weekly schedule … and then stick to it. If you did just two announcements a day you’ll definitely kickstart, or give your subscriber base a BIG boost by the end of the month.

Go to http://www.proofpositive.com/ezines/list.htm for a list of directories and announcement services.

Once you have finished with the list of directory and announcement services I have provided, keep on going. Keep looking for new services and new directories. If you persistently take a few minutes each day to promote your list, it will grow exponentially over time!!

If you are willing to spend a few dollars to save LOADS of time … keep reading.

————————————————- Automate Your Ezine or List Promotion Efforts ————————————————-

Keeping track of the lists you’ve announced to, adding new lists and developing linking and article placement campaigns takes time and can be an organizational nightmare!

If you are proficient in Access you can develop and program your own tracking list …. OR you can check out the following program that has been developed specifically to help you with your list promotion efforts.

Ezine Announce give you instant access to over 1600 resources where you can promote and market your ezine - you could easily spend 12 months wandering around the Internet trying to find this information yourself.

This software includes ALL the list announcement services and directories and hundreds of ezines that are interested in getting information about your articles.

If you are SERIOUS about promoting and growing your list … you’d be crazy to try it without this.

Check out the dozens of testimonials from some of the biggest list builders on the Internet …

… then take it for a SPIN!!

http://ezineannounce.proofpositive.info

And finally, you can build your list by tapping into a list building inferno …

——————————– Create a LIST Building Inferno! ——————————–

If you have a website, one of the fastest, easiest and NO COST ways to build a list is to join a list building co-op. This program enables you to add thousands of 100% opt-in subscribers to your list with very little effort.

List Inferno is a new tool that could well be the easiest, cheapest and fastest way to build your list yet developed. You get good quality targeted 100% opt-in leads in exchange for your participation in the co-op. All you have to do is put a simple line of code on your webpages … and you will start building your list almost immediately. I had new subscribers added to my list literally hours after joining the program. Anything that can give you free subscribers for virtually zero effort is worth a try - and this system can give you lots of those.

Bottom Line: This is probably the most effective list building system I have ever encountered. I have added MORE subscribers to my list using this method than any other fr^ee program I’ve tried … and I think I’ve tried them all!

http://inferno.proofpositive.info

Building your list is an ongoing process. It will not happen overnight. It will grow over time IF you take the steps outlined above every day and every week!

What is DVD Audio?

December 28th, 2008

DVD Audio is a music format that is designed to offer improved audio performance over CD. The new audio format can be used to provide listeners with Advanced Resolution stereo and/or multi-channel (up to a maximum of six channels) music. In order to play back DVD Audio discs, players have to be specially designed to support the format. So far, consumer electronics manufacturers have announced a range of DVD Audio players, including home decks, portable players and devies for cars.

DVD Audio has a sampling rate of up to 192kHz compared to a maximum of 44.1kHz for CD. It also supports resolutions of up to 24 bits, compared to 16bits on CD.

The idea behind DVD Audio is that it alllows peoducesr to give listeners a playback experience that is much more faithful to the original master recording that has been possible previously.

DVD Audio discs have a much higher capacity than CDs. This extra space can be used to provide audio at the highest possible quality or for longer recordings, or to provide additional material, such as infromation on the artist, photos and even video, all of which can be displaye don a television screen. Alternatively, DVD Audio discs currently on the market from the likes of the Warner group of labels have the audio content in both DVD Audio format and as Dolby Digital surround so that they can be played back on regular DVD players.

DVD Audio discs are navigable in the same way as DVD Video when polayed back on a player connected to a TV set. Users can select the required track from an on-screen menu and with an internet connection, can click on links to go to websites.

These dual format discs are a good way to kick-start the market while DVD Audio players are still relativley rare. The market will also be helped by combined DVD Video and Audio players.

Sarasota, Florida–June 13, 2005–Fremont John’s music is called acoustic thunder, and for a very good reason. His new release Timeline is a powerful musical statement, featuring spine tingling melodies and lyrics that cut like a knife. With nearly 20 years of classical piano training and an equal amount of time on the trombone, John is no stranger to playing a multitude of instruments. His chosen instruments on his new release are the guitar and his incredible voice to accompany his acoustic journeys, which makes his music authoritative and convincing.

Timeline features scorchers like “Jericho’s Wall,” which kicks things off creating strong imagery of battles won and lost. This man can belt out a song, when he sings “Forgive Me” you can tell he is playing for keeps, and on “No Pity On Me,” some twangy slide guitar that is blues and country from head to toe, are one of the many atmospheres set to his poignant lyrical prose.

His reputation and performances in Florida are becoming legendary and this new recording will solidify his standing as an artist on the move with the crossover ability that will reach out on a worldwide level in the independent music community. John is becoming a regular attraction at Tampa Bay Devil Rays games; he will be performing on June 28 at 5:15 pm and July 31 at Noon. 10 Time Saving Tips for Ezine Publishers

December 28th, 2008

I recently spend several frustrating hours laying out and mailing an email newsletter. If you publish a free ezine, you will know its very time consuming to get all the information formatted correctly before sending. My long lesson should help you!

1. Use master templates

Create a master template using a word processor like MS word. Opening a word document, change the font to courier new - The same font that standard text files use.

Create a line of 60 characters across the page. Use “select all” then move your right hand margin to the end of the line, to set the margin for the whole document.

This stops this effect:

Hi
Welcome to
My
ezine and Hope…etc

Include any details that go in every ezine. -Title, date, lines for layout, contents list copyright etc

Save as a “text file with Line breaks” You can use this to format all your ezines.

Do the same for any articles you write, so your articles are formatted and ready to cut and paste into your ezine.

2. Us a word processor A lot of editors’ recommend using a new program just for your ezine, simply follow these steps:

Using the master, open MS word or similar program and open your master file you have created. Now you can use the grammar checker, spelling etc of a powerful program without formatting problems. When you paste any information, recheck the margins.

Remember to check and save as July.txt or whatever for your newsletter and not over your master.

3. Another pair of eyes

Always get it checked “twice”, wait until the next day to read it again before sending. I use my wife as a first check, before it goes any further.

4. Check Send
You can see what it looks like in your mailbox by using and email bounce service. Send it to mailto:echo@connectingonline.com or mailto:format@mail-list.com. It will bounce back to you. This is helpful especially if you publish an html mailing list.

5. Shortcut on desktop

Place a shortcut to you directory where your master and upcoming ezines are in. That way every time you find a link, that would be helpful to your subscribers, copy and paste it straight in.

6. Build over time

If you ezine goes out fortnightly, the day after it goes out make some progress on the next one, even it means just check the layout, but get it started and finish it a couple days before publishing day. This gives you time to check it before sending.

7. Write your own articles

How can this save your time? By having your own articles, you can increase your creditability and never have to look for new fresh information.

Ezines build customer trust for ongoing sales. Anybody can write articles, you don’t have to be a world class author.

8. Use a proof reader

This doesn’t have to be a large expensive service, I use students who do a good fast job. I email the information to them, the next day I get it back ready to send. The best way is to send it as an attachment and keep an eye on your formatting when you get it back from them.

9. Treat it like a 100,000

That’s right, 100,00 subscribers “and” $100,000. Keep to your publishing dates, treat your subscribers like gold and they will trust you and become long time repeat customers.

10. Use a mailing list provider.

I used a lot of services from software, like mailoop, list servers etc. So far bringing the service in house using a personalized script Mail Master Pro has been a good option, check it out at

http://www.cgitoolbox.com/cgi/mmp/

Personalizing you newsletter will make it “stand out” from the other 80,000+ ezines online.

Producing an email newsletter is an excellent way to build trust, promote your site and increase sales. Remember that it should be only one of you promotion methods and way of increasing sales. Have a great day.

How to Put Some Sizzle in Your Summer Parties

December 25th, 2008

5 Ways to be a Gracious Host and a Great Guest

Now that the hot weather is finally here, we are looking forward to long, lazy days on the beach and hot summer nights that heat up after dark. Here are a few tips from lifestyle guru Kim Kristofferson-Magnusson on maximizing your fun in the sun!

1) For family celebrations…KEEP IT SIMPLE!!

Whether you’re hosting a graduation party for 20 or a family reunion for 200, remember that it’s your day to have fun too! To make the most of your time visiting with family and friends, take a vacation from your oven and corral your “grillmaster” of choice out on the patio. Prepare a variety of cold salads ahead of time, pick up some fresh bread, add a frozen dessert, and voila… dinner is served! A buffet-style offering is wonderful outdoors, just roll up flatware in festive napkins, stack up some bright and shiny plastic plates, and all your guests can easily serve themselves.

2) When you’re the guest…get in the “Theme” of it!

If you have a much-anticipated invite to THE party of the season, don’t show up empty-handed… if the party has a particular theme (most of the SUPER-FUN ones do!), bring the host/hostess a little something that shows you appreciate all their efforts and planning. For example, if your host is a poker-aficionado planning a “Casino Night”, try filling an ice bucket with playing cards, dice, poker chips, shot glasses, and poker themed cocktail napkins. If your hostess is a pampered princess who is hosting a “Girls Night Out” (who, me??), she will love you forever if you fill an oversized basket with some bath salts, perfume samples, delicious smelling body lotion, a steamy novel, and an eye mask…just go the extra mile, and your invite will be the first to go out next year!

3) When you’re the host, think of all the party-goers…

When you’re hosting a “bring your whole family” outdoor soiree, don’t forget to think of the “little people”…if the children are happy, the moms and dads are happy too, so be well-prepared with activities to keep little hands busy. Try setting up a ping-pong table on the patio, where the future sports stars can organize a tournament. Croquet is an old, lady-like game that even the toughest of tomboys will love. Even a sprinkler will do in a pinch…

4) Favours are not just for weddings!

Don’t you just love those little “take-me-home’s” at weddings…little seedlings to plant, inscribed golf balls to better your score… When hosting a BBQ or outdoor event, favours are a perfect end to the evening and will serve as a reminder of your fun and frivolity. Why not try making your own BBQ sauce or marinade for guests to take home? Buy a bunch of brightly-colored plastic sand pails to fill with shells and rocks collected on your stretch of beach, or even a festive silk lei, sure to bring warmth over the long winter ahead.

5) Have Fun!!

The most important part of any great party is that you celebrate your wonderful family and friends who have come together. You don’t need an excuse, just gather your pals for great laughs, good music, and reminiscing, and voila…the stage is set for some sizzling!

Damkier in Strauss Opera “A Night in Venice” to Close April

December 25th, 2008

Brent L. Damkier, (pronounced Dam-key-r) handsome lyric tenor at the Regensburg Opera, is best known for his recent roles as Prince Tamino in The Magic Flute and Prince Ramiro in Cinderella.

Eine Nacht in Venedig, (A Night in Venice) by Strauss premiered on October 23, 2004. Damkier plays the roll of Pappacoda, a Spaghetti cook. It is a tremendous comic roll and Damkier usually receives the most applause even through it is a smaller singing role. This is the remaining performance.

Just 75 miles (120 kilometers) out of Munich is the historic German town of Regensburg. Just off the Danube River, nestled in the heart of a charming old town square is an intimate 380 year-old opera house seating 524 dedicated patrons and international guests; it is home to the leading tenor.

Damkier, who has performed throughout Europe, thrills audiences, with his sweet interpretation and punctuated tenor dexterity. From character parts, to the male ingénue, to the leading man, Damkier is bridging his operating roots to a U.S. tour in 2006 which will cross-over to a cabaret format broadening his audience and fan club. One of the recital performances in early 2006 will be recorded and distributed for wide release.

The youthful face looks to be fresh out of high school having originally hailed from Northern California, yet is the face, voice, and actor of a well-trained virtuoso in his thirties. Six years ago without any training in German, the nearly six-foot tall, handsome, golden-eyed, fair-skinned performer headed for Germany to hone his craft on the stages of several smaller opera companies. According to producer and promoter TR Cutler, Damkier will make his recital debut in South Florida.

Eight Tips for Ezine Writers

December 25th, 2008

Have you ever wondered why Ezine Articles have become one of the most effective marketing techniques on the Web?

The reason is quite simple.

People very rarely go online looking for something to buy. They go online looking for information - free information.

They want to be educated, entertained and informed. And the best way to do that is to write free Articles for Newsletters.

At the bottom of your Article is your 4- or 5-line Resource Box. That’s what turns your Article into one of the most powerful marketing techniques on the Web.

Here are eight tips to help you write your Articles and get them published.

(1) Never allow yourself to think that you’ve run out of ideas. Instead, have the opposite thought: that there are more ideas than you could possibly write about. I heard someone saying recently (with regard to Ezine Articles) that everything that could possibly be written about has already been written about. Nonsense! The Internet is evolving so fast that even if you wrote a new Article every day, you still couldn’t keep up.

(2) The Golden Rule of Five. Keep your Article titles short - no more than five words. Ezine Editors love short titles (they fit into the subject field of an email).

(3) Keep your paragraphs short - no more than 3 sentences. It’s much harder to read a computer screen than a printed page - so make it easy for your readers.

(4) Make sure your Article flows properly. The easiest way to do this is to write down the opening and closing sentences of each of your paragraphs, then read what you have. If it makes sense and moves along nicely, you have an Article that is well organized and flows properly.

(5) Include a word count at the top of your Article. This makes it easy for an Ezine Editor to make a quick decision on whether to use your Article. It also shows you’ve been thorough in preparing your Article for publication.

(6) Check all the links in your Article before submitting it. Then include a note that says: ‘All the links in this Article were checked and verified on (date)’. Again, this saves time for the Ezine Editor and demonstrates that you’ve been thorough.

(7) Offer a Free Report in your Resource Box. When someone reads your Article in an Ezine, they probably won’t be connected to the Internet. So the challenge is this: to offer something so interesting and exciting that they’ll fire up their modem and visit your website. The best way to do that is to offer a Free Report.

(8) Put all your Articles on autoresponders and then create another autoresponder that lists all your Articles, with an autoresponder address for each Article (e.g.: all-articles@yourdomain.com). When you submit your Article to a List or to an Article Archive, always include a note that says: “For a complete list of Articles by this author please send a blank email to: all-articles@yourdomain.com

Remember - Ezine Articles are probably the fastest way there is of building your presence on the Web and getting your message in front of a targeted audience. Happy writing!

December 24th, 2008

Let’s trace the number of Chinese characters from Han Dynasty 汉朝 (206 B.C. to 220 A.D.)

说文解字 (Shuwenjiezhi) - The first complete dictionary that listed all Chinese character was published in Han Dynasty 汉朝 at around 100 A.D. It was regarded as the the origin of Chinese characters. It included 9,353 characters.

康熙字典(Kangxi) - the well known classic of Chinese dictionary was published in 1716 of Qing Dynasty 清朝. The Kangxi dictionary included about 46,964 characters compiled in 42 booklets. Most of the characters were unused and rare variant accumulated over the centuries. Those characters were regrouped under 214 radicals still in use today in many dictionaries to classified characters in traditional form.

The first official simplified form characters were published in 1956 by the People’s Republic of China. Many additions and modifications to the original list were adopted since. The list included 6,500 simplified characters.

Nowadays the simplified form characters are used in China and Singapore, the traditional form characters are still used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and most of the overseas Chinese communities.

In 1952, literacy for peasants was defined as knowledge of 1,500 characters and literacy for labour workers as knowledge of 2,000 characters.

A well educated person can probably recognize more than 6,000 characters.

Since Chinese words are generally composed of two or three characters, a few thousand characters can be used to understand hundreds and thousands of words.

The Chinese computerized fonts for words processor include 6,500 characters of the simplified form and 13,500 of the traditional form.
