How to Get Started in Application Development
January 20th, 2010If you have an interest in computers, enjoy maths (some people do) and logical thinking, a career in programming or application development could well be a good career choice. With the advent of the web and the ever growing reliance on all things Internet based it can also quite rightly be described as a growing industry.
If you are interested there are many free tools and tutorials available on the web. To start with a programming language such as Java you will need a compiler to compile the code you write into a working program, but a simple text editor will suffice as a tool for actually writing the code. If you are more interested in becoming a web developer, you should look towards languages such as PHP, HTML and CSS.
Books, online tutorials and forums are great for getting started, but the next step should be towards a formal qualification. Most colleges and Universities have a range of computer based courses nowadays and usually all of them have some level of programming at their core. A formal qualification should enhance your chance of employment as well as help towards you landing that dream job a bit further down the line.
A super powerful modern computer isn’t needed to program most computer programs, so if you think it may be the choice for you try it out on your computer at home. After a few hours you will realise if it is something you enjoy or not, and if it is, good luck!
